Learning to Identify Musical Pitches – Beginner Ear Training

The ability to identify pitches without an established reference is called perfect pitch, or absolute pitch. Essentially, musicians with perfect pitch know what a note is when they hear it, without any restrictions. This is a useful ability because it allows musicians to do things like playing by ear and transcribing music. For singers, it’s essential to have a good command of pitch in order to perform in tune.

Identifying pitches by name, regardless of instrument or context, requires a few specific skills. First, you need to have the basic knowledge of what those notes are, meaning their names under either the A-G or solfege naming systems.

You’ll also need to be familiar with the pitches that belong to those notes. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to memorize that, for example, F4 in standard pitch vibrates at 349.229 Hz, but it’s possible for a musician to memorize the sound of that pitch, so that it can be identified or reproduced at any time.

It’s also necessary to account for the characteristics of the given instrument and its possible timbres (the different sounds that can be made by one instrument using different techniques) and the harmonic background of the music. Musicians have to understand individual and combined pitches without being thrown off by any other aspect of the music.

Through ear training, a musician can acquire all of these skills, and then some. Ear training can incorporate various exercises designed specifically to impart the ability to identify pitches in a variety of musical contexts. Ultimately, by putting the time in to train the ear properly and thoroughly, identifying pitches can become second nature.

Therefore, the way to reap the benefits that come with a strong command with pitch is through ear training. This way, anyone, regardless of ability, can learn to identify individual pitches. After ear training, you’ll find yourself recognizing those specific notes in music the same way other listeners make out the words.
